World Ocean Day: What it is, and how you can celebrate
World Ocean Day is a day that brings attention to the importance of protecting our oceans by uniting and supporting a global network of organizations with a common goal to preserve this incredibly precious resource.
World Ocean Day was first proposed by Canada's International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) in 1992, at the Earth Summit in Rio, and solidified as a global event in the early 2000’s before becoming officially recognized by the United Nations Generally Assembly in 2008 (today it is powered by the World Ocean Day Youth Advisory Council).
Though it happens once a year on June 8th, as a brand on a mission to help preserve our oceans, World Ocean Day is kind of a big deal for us.
We don’t just celebrate on this one day though as we’re working to prevent ocean-pollution every day of the year!
We do this in a number of ways:
- We’re the only beverage in the world in bottles made from 100% Recycled, Certified Ocean-Bound Plastic
- Every ZenWTR Bottle is made from up to 5 recycled plastic bottles that were rescued from at-risk coastal environments, preventing them from reaching and polluting the ocean!
- We’re Certified Plastic Negative! ZenWTR was the first beverage in the world to attain this certification and it means that we support programs that recover and recycle 200% of our annual plastic footprint.
- We give 1% of sales back to ocean conservation and recycling education and advocacy, supporting programs across the country that organize beach cleanups and help increase access to recycling in underserved communities.
